Battery compartment
A recess in a guitar's body with a removable cover, holding the battery that powers active pickups or an onboard preamp.
Active electronics need a power source, and most designs use a nine-volt battery held in a compartment that can be opened from the back of the body without removing the control cavity cover. The compartment normally switches the circuit on when a cable is inserted into the output jack, so leaving a lead plugged in drains the battery. A common symptom of a failing battery is a drop in output and a compressed, distorted tone rather than silence, which is why players working with active instruments carry spares.
Example: A guitar with active pickups and a small hinged flap on the back of the body for its nine-volt battery has a battery compartment.
