My Guitar Notes

Blend control

A knob that mixes two sources in proportion rather than switching between them, most often the two pickups of a two-pickup instrument.

Instead of a selector that gives neck, both or bridge, a blend pot lets the player sit at any point between them, which is how many basses are wired and why jazz basses have that continuous reedy middle sound. The same idea appears in acoustic guitars mixing a piezo with an internal microphone, and in effects mixing dry with processed signal. Mechanically it is usually a dual pot with one track wired in reverse.

Example: sweeping a blend from neck to bridge while a note rings gives the gradual change of colour that a three-way switch can only hint at.
