CAGED system

A way of seeing the fretboard as five moveable chord shapes whose order repeats up the neck, covering every major chord in every position.

The CAGED system takes the five open major chord shapes a beginner learns and treats them as templates that slide up the neck, so the same chord can be played in five positions with five different fingerings and five different inversions of its notes. Because every scale and arpeggio lives inside those shapes, it gives a player a single mental map that links chords, scales and lead playing instead of several disconnected ones. The letters stand for the five shapes in the order they appear along the neck.

Example: Playing the same major chord in five places up the neck using the shapes of C, A, G, E and D is applying the CAGED system.
