Chuck
A percussive strum in which the right hand chops across muted strings to produce a drum-like sound.
A chuck is the guitar imitating a snare or a hi-hat: the pick crosses the strings while the fret hand has them damped, so the result is a broad, unpitched scrape. It is the backbone of ska and reggae rhythm guitar, where the chuck lands on the off-beats and the chord is only allowed to ring on the upbeat. Acoustic singer-songwriters use a lighter version to add a percussive spine to strummed accompaniment.
Example: The short, snare-like chop that answers every bass note in a ska groove is a chuck.
