Dal segno

A direction meaning from the sign, instructing the player to jump back to the marked sign rather than to the beginning.

Dal segno, abbreviated D.S., works like da capo but returns the player to an interior point marked with a sign rather than to the opening bar. Common variants send the player to the coda or to the word fine once the repeat has been made. The system exists because much published music has an introduction that should only be heard once, so jumping back to the beginning would repeat material nobody wants to hear twice.

Example: A song with an eight-bar intro and a dal segno al coda mark plays the intro once and then loops back to the verse.
