Digital delay

A delay that stores the signal in digital memory, producing clean, repeatable echoes with precisely defined delay times.

Because the signal is sampled and stored rather than passed through an imperfect analogue circuit, digital delay can offer very long delay times, exact tap-tempo sync and repeats that stay bright as they fade. Early digital units were criticised as cold and sterile, and modern designs usually add filtering to soften the repeats, but the clarity remains the point: they work as rhythmic, precise effects rather than as atmosphere. They are the standard choice when the delay needs to lock to the tempo of a track.

Example: A delay whose repeats are as clear as the original note and land exactly in time with the song is digital.
