Djent
A modern metal style built on tightly muted, syncopated low-string riffs, extended-range guitars and precise rhythmic unison.
The name imitates the sound of a heavily palm-muted low note, and the style is defined by rhythm rather than melody: riffs move between odd groupings, guitar and drums hit together, and open, ringing chord voicings are used for contrast. Extended-range instruments and low tunings are standard, as are unusual chord shapes built from stacked fourths rather than thirds. Effects such as pitch shifters and compressors are used to keep the low notes defined.
Example: A syncopated riff of muted low notes and ringing wide-interval chords on a seven-string guitar is djent.
