Ear training
Deliberate practice in recognising intervals, chords, rhythms and progressions by hearing them.
Ear training closes the gap between what a player can imagine and what they can play, and it is the skill that lets someone learn a song from a recording, hear a chord change coming and play a harmony part on the spot. It is built from small, specific drills: identifying intervals, singing a note and checking it against the instrument, transcribing short phrases. Guitarists often neglect it because shapes make playing easy without listening closely, which is exactly why it repays the effort.
Example: Working out a song's chords from a recording without a chart is an application of ear training.
