Expression pedal

A foot-controlled pedal that sends a varying control voltage or resistance to an effect, letting the player change a parameter continuously while both hands stay on the instrument.

It does not process audio itself; it is a remote control. What it sweeps depends on the receiving unit, and common assignments include delay mix, reverb level, modulation depth, filter cutoff, pitch shift or the volume of a whole rig. Some work by a standard stereo jack and a specified resistance, while others use MIDI or a proprietary connection, which is why matching the pedal to the device matters.

Example: an expression pedal assigned to delay mix lets a player bring echoes in for one phrase and take them out again without bending to the board.
