My Guitar Notes

Flamenco

The Andalusian tradition of song, dance and guitar, whose technique includes percussive strumming, rasgueado and the Phrygian mode.

Flamenco guitar technique is among the most demanding in the world: rasgueado rolls with the fingers, golpe taps on the soundboard, picado runs played with rest strokes and tremolo figures used to sustain melodies. The harmony is built on Phrygian material with a flattened second, which gives the music its unmistakable Spanish colour, and the rhythm, called the compas, has strict forms the player must know. Classical players often borrow its techniques while its own tradition remains distinct.

Example: A solo nylon-string piece with rapid finger rolls across the strings and taps on the soundboard is flamenco.
