Fret cutters
Pliers with a wide, flush-cutting jaw used to cut fret wire to length and to trim the protruding tang.
Ordinary wire cutters will crush and distort fret wire, and the compressed metal cannot be seated properly afterwards, which is why fret cutters have a broad flat face that supports the wire as it is cut. Some versions have a relieved jaw that also nips the tang back where a fret crosses a bound fretboard. Correct use leaves clean ends that can be bevelled and dressed, which is the difference between a professional refret and a messy one.
Example: Trimming new fret wire to the width of the fretboard before pressing it in is done with fret cutters.
