Hybrid picking

A technique that combines a flatpick with the fingers, usually holding the pick between thumb and index finger and plucking with the middle and ring fingers as well.

The pick takes the lower strings or the attack while the fingers take the higher ones or add notes the pick cannot reach, which makes chord-melody and country-style lines playable without switching technique mid-phrase. It also produces two distinct tones at once, since a fingertip sounds softer and rounder than a plectrum. The main difficulty is coordinating the pick and fingers so their timing is identical.

Example: a pedal-steel-style double stop played with the middle finger while the pick holds the bass note is the sound that defines hybrid picking in country music.
