Jazz fusion
A style combining jazz harmony and improvisation with the electric instrumentation, rhythms and volume of rock.
Fusion put the electric guitar at the centre of an improvised music, with distorted tones, pedals and rock drumming applied to jazz chord progressions and modal forms. Its players are typically fluent in both worlds, reading complex harmony while improvising over vamps that would be unusual in a straight-ahead jazz setting. The genre was also where guitar effects such as the wah and the harmoniser crossed over from experimental use into mainstream playing.
Example: An instrumental with rock drums and distorted guitar soloing over extended jazz chords is jazz fusion.
