Loose jack

An output socket whose mounting has worked loose, allowing the socket to move or rotate when a cable is inserted.

A jack is held by a nut, by two screws on a plate, or by the body of the socket itself, and repeated plugging eventually loosens that mounting. Left alone, a loose jack can spin and twist its own wiring until a lead breaks, which turns a two-minute repair into a rewiring job. The cure is to hold the socket from inside while tightening the nut or the screws, and to use a cable with a clean plug so the socket is not being forced.

Example: An output socket that turns when a cable is pushed in, eventually crackling, is a loose jack.
