Mahogany
A dense but workable tropical hardwood, the traditional choice for set-neck solid bodies, necks and the back and sides of acoustic guitars.
Its reputation comes from a warm, midrange-forward voice with a smooth top end and a strong fundamental, which flatters distorted tones and gives acoustic instruments body without excessive brightness. It machines and glues well and takes a finish evenly, though it is heavy enough that large solid bodies can become uncomfortable. Many different species are sold under the name, and the acoustically prized genuine varieties are increasingly restricted.
Example: a set-neck double-cut in mahogany with a maple cap produces the thick, vocal lead sound that made that combination a standard.
