My Guitar Notes

Math rock

A rock style built on unusual time signatures, intricate interlocking guitar parts and clean, often tapped playing.

Math rock takes the odd metres and precise ensemble playing of progressive rock and strips away the bombast, leaving two guitars that interlock like a puzzle, usually clean, usually without a bass player carrying the root. Tapping is common because it allows wide intervals and polyphonic figures that would be awkward to pluck. The listener hears music that seems to stop and start, but the players are counting extremely carefully.

Example: A clean instrumental in seven-eight in which two guitars play complementary tapped figures rather than chords is math rock.
