My Guitar Notes

Nashville sound

The polished, session-driven country production style that developed in Nashville studios, with smooth arrangements and prominent, clean guitar work.

The Nashville sound replaced the raw fiddles and steel of earlier country with lush vocals, string sections and a smoother rhythm section, produced by a small group of studio musicians who worked together constantly. Its guitar parts are economical and perfectly placed, more often than not based on the number system rather than written notation. The style shaped how commercial country music sounds to this day and produced the session-player culture that named the number system.

Example: A smoothly produced country recording with a clean, sparse guitar part and prominent vocal harmonies follows the Nashville sound.
