Potentiometer
A variable resistor used as a volume or tone control, its value measured in kilo-ohms and chosen to suit the pickups in the circuit.
Its resistance loads the pickup, and that load is part of the resonant circuit that shapes the tone, so the value matters: a higher value keeps more high frequencies and sounds brighter, while a lower one rolls them off. The taper, whether the resistance rises quickly or slowly as the knob turns, decides how usable the control feels across its travel. The usual values are around 250 or 500 kilo-ohms, with 500 more common alongside humbuckers.
Example: replacing a 500 kilo-ohm volume pot with a 250 in the same guitar noticeably darkens the sound without touching the tone control.
