Punk rock
A fast, stripped-back rock style that favoured simple chords, distorted guitars, short songs and direct delivery.
Punk simplified rock deliberately, removing long solos and complex harmony in favour of speed, volume and immediacy. Its guitar playing is built almost entirely from power chords played in relentless downstrokes, with occasional single-note lines and very little dynamic shading. Technically modest, it is demanding in a different way: stamina, precise attack and the ability to keep time at speed matter far more than vocabulary.
Example: A short, fast song of power chords played in constant downstrokes with a distorted tone is punk rock.
