Rest
A written silence of a specific duration, shown by its own symbol rather than by a note.
Rests matter as much as notes in guitar playing, because the space between chords is what makes a groove readable. Each note value has a matching rest, and a bar of four-four time can be filled with any combination of notes and rests as long as the total is correct. Rhythm guitar parts are often written mostly as rests with occasional stabs, which is why players who ignore rests end up overplaying and stepping on the rest of the band.
Example: A funk part in which the chord lands on the last sixteenth of the bar and nothing sounds elsewhere is written mostly as rests.
