Rock and roll
The mid-twentieth-century style that combined blues, country and rhythm and blues into a fast, danceable electric guitar music.
Rock and roll made the electric guitar the centre of popular music, and its guitar vocabulary is deliberately simple: two or three chords, a driving backbeat, and short repeated riffs rather than long solos. The style borrowed its rhythm from jump blues and its twang from country, and the slapback echo and hollow-body guitar of the early recordings defined its sound. Almost everything in later rock descends from it in some measure.
Example: A fast twelve-bar with a boogie bass line, echo on the vocal and a hollow-body guitar is rock and roll.
