Rotary speaker
A cabinet in which a horn and a drum speaker rotate physically, or an effect that imitates them, producing pitch and amplitude modulation.
Rotating a speaker creates a genuine Doppler shift, so the pitch rises as the source moves towards the listener and falls as it moves away, while the amplitude also varies as the sound is aimed in different directions. The combination of the two produces the rich, shimmering, three-dimensional swirl long associated with organ playing and copied by every chorus pedal since. Few guitarists tour with a real rotating cabinet, so the effect usually arrives in pedal form.
Example: A guitar part with a wide, breathing swirl that sounds as though the speaker is spinning in the room uses a rotary speaker effect.
