Tap tempo
The feature that lets a player set an effect's time, rate or delay period by tapping rather than by dialling a number.
It exists because rhythmic effects only work when their rate matches the music, and a tempo expressed in milliseconds is not something a player can judge by ear while playing. Most implementations take an average of two to four taps and convert that interval into a delay time, and many also offer rhythmic subdivisions so the repeat can fall on an eighth note or a dotted value. It is a convenience feature, but a decisive one on stage.
Example: a delay set by tap tempo stays lined up with a song when the drummer's tempo drifts.
