My Guitar Notes

Thrash metal

An extreme metal style built on very fast palm-muted downstroke riffs, chromatic movement and aggressive alternate-picked lead playing.

Thrash takes the rhythmic intensity of metal and raises the tempo until only downstrokes can keep the attack even, which is why its riffs are so often played in strict alternating-nothing patterns. Its harmony tends towards the chromatic and the diminished rather than the blues, and its solos are usually dense, fast and technically demonstrative. The genre is a useful study for anyone working on right-hand stamina and precision, because the standard it sets is unusually high.

Example: A very fast low-string riff played entirely in downstrokes at high gain is characteristic of thrash metal.
