Treble booster

A boost pedal that lifts the upper midrange and treble rather than the whole frequency range, driving an amplifier into distortion with a biting, cutting edge.

A treble booster is a deliberately narrow device: instead of a flat increase in level it emphasises the frequencies a valve amplifier finds hardest to reproduce, which pushes the amp into overdrive while also sharpening the attack. Placed after a dark-sounding, mid-heavy guitar it can transform the tone, and it was the trick behind a great deal of early British rock guitar. Because it is so selective it can sound thin on a bright instrument, so it rewards matching to the rest of the rig.

Example: A pedal that adds almost no bass, makes the guitar sound sharper and drives a valve amp harder is a treble booster.
