Volta bracket
A bracket over the end of a repeated passage carrying a number that shows which time through it is played.
Volta brackets solve the problem of a repeated section that needs a different ending each time: the first bracket is played on the first pass and skipped on the second, when the second bracket is taken instead. They are extremely common in songs where the verse ends differently before a chorus than before a repeat. On guitar this often means a different final chord or a short fill, and the number in the bracket is the only clue as to which one applies.
Example: A repeat whose first ending turns back to the verse and whose second ending leads into the chorus uses volta brackets.
