My Guitar Notes

Bubinga

A dense African hardwood of the Guibourtia genus, pinkish to reddish when cut and darkening with exposure, used where weight and rigidity are acceptable.

It is hard, stiff and heavily figured in some pieces, which makes it popular for thin tops and for basses where the mass is less of a problem, and it is also used for laminated necks, where alternating strips add rigidity as well as looks. It works and glues well but blunts tools quickly. Because it is heavy, a solid body in bubinga is a substantial instrument to wear on a strap.

Example: a five-string bass with a bubinga top has a bright, defined attack that helps individual notes stay audible in a low register.

typical use: Body tops, necks and fretboards.
