Corian
A solid-surface material of acrylic resin and mineral filler, used for nuts, saddles and occasionally bodies.
Corian is the solid-surface worktop material, made by suspending alumina trihydrate in acrylic resin, and it is uniform, hard and easily machined. Instrument makers have used it for nuts and saddles on production guitars because sheet stock is cheap, it files like bone and it needs no seasoning. It is commonly described as sounding closer to bone than to plastic, with a slightly glassy edge and an even response across the strings. The common objection is appearance, since it comes in flat uniform colours with no grain, and a slot cut too fine at the edge can chip.
Example: A factory Corian nut on a mid-priced electric does its job perfectly well, though most repairers would still fit bone once the original wears out.
typical use: Nuts and saddles on production instruments, and occasionally decorative body parts.
