Control knob
The cap fitted over the shaft of a volume or tone potentiometer, which the player grips in order to turn it.
Knobs are held on a pot shaft either by a small grub screw, by a split shaft that grips a splined fitting, or occasionally by a collet. The type matters when replacing electronics, because a knob designed for a solid shaft will not grip a splined one and vice versa, and the wrong fit produces a knob that spins freely or pulls off in the hand. Speed knobs and barrel knobs change how easily a player can roll the volume down with the little finger while playing.
Example: A translucent plastic cap with a numbered dial that pulls off the top of a volume pot is a control knob.
