My Guitar Notes

DAW

Digital audio workstation software, used to record, edit, arrange, mix and export audio on a computer.

A DAW is the studio in software form: it records tracks, allows them to be cut, moved and processed, hosts plug-in effects and instruments, and mixes everything to a final file. The choice of DAW matters far less than fluency in one, since the differences are mostly workflow and bundled content rather than audio quality. For guitarists the useful features are usually amp simulation, tempo-locked effects and the ability to loop a section for practice.

Example: Software in which a guitarist records seven takes of a solo over a backing track and then edits the best parts together is a DAW.
