Ferrule
A small metal insert or sleeve fitted into the wood to take a screw, a string end or a friction point so the soft timber is not chewed up.
On a string-through-body guitar, the ferrules are the six recessed collars on the back where the ball ends rest, stopping each string from cutting into the wood and keeping the ends tidy. On a bolt-on neck, threaded inserts turn a screw-bearing hole into a metal thread that can be tightened many times without stripping. Elsewhere the same idea protects a tuning post, a bridge plate or the tip of a tremolo arm.
Example: a string-through-body design without its ferrules will slowly pull the ball ends into the timber, which is why the inserts are fitted at the factory.
