Hookup wire

The thin insulated wire used to connect pickups, pots, switches and jacks inside a guitar.

Hookup wire inside an electric guitar is usually a stranded or single-core wire of around twenty to twenty-four gauge, flexible enough to be routed through narrow channels without breaking. Single-core wire is easier to solder neatly, while stranded wire survives repeated flexing better at points such as the jack. Shielding the wire, either with a braided outer conductor or a separate ground lead, matters in high-impedance circuits where any hum picked up in the loom ends up at the amplifier.

Example: Rewiring a guitar involves cutting lengths of hookup wire to connect each pickup to the switch and the pots.
