Hygrometer
An instrument for measuring the relative humidity of the air, used to keep a guitar's environment within a safe range.
Most acoustic guitar problems are moisture problems, and a hygrometer is the only way to know which way the room is drifting: below about forty per cent the wood shrinks and cracks appear, above about sixty per cent the top swells and the action rises. A cheap digital unit kept in the case or the room is enough for most players. Measuring is the point, since a humidity programme applied without measurement will either do nothing or cause the very damage it was meant to prevent.
Example: A small digital unit inside a guitar case showing forty-five per cent relative humidity is a hygrometer.
