Locking tuner

A tuning machine with a mechanism that clamps the string inside the post, so the string is locked rather than wound on in coils.

Locking tuners cut string changes to a fraction of the time, since the string is threaded, clamped and tuned with almost no wrapping, and they improve tuning stability by removing the slack that wraps would otherwise settle out. With staggered post heights they can also remove the need for string trees, which is why they are popular on guitars where the headstock angles the strings awkwardly. They do not, on their own, fix a guitar that slips at the nut.

Example: a player changing strings between sets will use locking tuners to be back in tune in under a minute.
