On-axis miking
Pointing a microphone directly at the centre of a sound source, so it hears the most focused and brightest part of it.
On the axis of a speaker cone the microphone hears the highest concentration of high frequencies, which gives the most detailed and aggressive guitar sound. It is the starting position for most guitar amp recording, from which the engineer moves the microphone outwards towards the edge of the cone or angles it away to soften the result. Because the response changes so quickly across the cone, a centimetre either way can make an audible difference.
Example: A microphone placed dead centre on a guitar speaker, producing a bright, present tone, is on-axis.
