Preset
A stored set of effect settings that can be recalled instantly, either on a digital pedal, a multieffect or a modelling amplifier.
Presets are the practical benefit of digital gear: instead of twisting knobs between songs, a player recalls a complete sound, including which effect is on and at what level, from a numbered slot or a footswitch. The trade-off is that presets can encourage a player to stop listening, and many units ship with demonstrations of every capability rather than usable starting points. A well-organised bank of presets, arranged in set order, is one of the genuinely useful products of digital guitar technology.
Example: A guitarist who changes tone between verse and chorus by stepping on a numbered footswitch is using presets.
