Modeling
The reproduction of an amplifier's or effect's behaviour by computation, so a digital device responds to the input in the way the original circuit would.
Modeling goes beyond copying a frequency response: a good model also imitates how the original compresses, how it cleans up as the guitar's volume is reduced, and how its tone controls interact. Some implementations are constructed from circuit equations, others from measured captures of an individual unit. The practical trade against a real amplifier is weight, cost and consistency against the small non-linearities players describe as feel.
Example: reducing a guitar's volume knob on a well-modeled amp cleans the sound up gradually, which is the behaviour players use to judge how convincing a model is.
