My Guitar Notes

Re-amping

Sending an already-recorded clean guitar track back out through an amplifier and cabinet, so the tone can be decided after the performance was captured.

The player records the dry signal through a direct box while monitoring through a modeler or amp, and the dry part is kept untouched. Later the track is sent out of the interface at the right level into a real amplifier, which is miked as normal, and the resulting tone is recorded as a separate track. It allows changes of amplifier, cabinet, microphone and position without asking the player to perform again.

Example: a part tracked at home through a pedal can be re-amped in a studio through a full stack, and the performance stays identical.
