Restringing

Removing the old strings from an instrument and fitting a new set, including winding them to pitch and stretching them.

Restringing is the most frequent maintenance job a player does, and doing it well makes a real difference: strings should be wound neatly downwards on the post, trimmed to leave a tidy end, and brought up to pitch gradually rather than in one go. It is also the moment to clean the fretboard, check the nut and saddle for wear, and look for anything loose. Changing gauges at the same time means the setup, especially relief and intonation, will probably need adjusting.

Example: Changing all six strings, cleaning the fretboard while they are off, and bringing the instrument back to pitch is restringing.
