Sample rate

The number of times per second an audio signal is measured when it is converted to digital, usually expressed in kilohertz.

Sample rate determines the highest frequency that can be represented, at roughly half the rate, so forty-four point one kilohertz covers the full range of human hearing and higher rates extend the ultrasonic range. Higher rates also allow gentler filtering, which some engineers argue preserves the edges of transients, though the audible difference is small. Practical considerations, including file size and processing load, usually decide the choice.

Example: A recording made at forty-eight kilohertz can represent frequencies up to about twenty-four kilohertz, above the limit of hearing.
