Sapele
A dense African hardwood, similar in appearance to mahogany and often used as its substitute for bodies, necks and acoustic backs and sides.
It has a brighter, slightly harder edge than true mahogany and a tight, even grain with a ripple figure that shows well under a clear finish, which is why it is used both structurally and decoratively. Being dense, it can make a heavier instrument, though it machines and glues cleanly. Its suitability for the whole body makes it a common choice on mid-priced acoustics where a solid wood is wanted at a modest cost.
Example: an all-sapele acoustic body gives a clear, punchy midrange that records well even if it lacks the depth of rosewood.
