Soundhole
The opening in the top of an acoustic instrument through which the internal air cavity projects sound.
The soundhole is not simply a window into the box: its size and position tune the resonance of the air inside the body, which is what gives an acoustic guitar its low-end response. Enlarging or moving it changes the balance of the instrument, and some makers add a second, smaller hole or a side port to project sound towards the player. A soundhole pickup needs no drilling precisely because the opening already exists.
Example: An acoustic guitar played hard has a strong low resonance that comes largely from the air resonance of the soundhole.
