Stomp box
A floor-mounted effects unit that the player switches with a foot, a term that predates the modern pedalboard.
The name comes from the act of stamping on it, and it covers everything from a simple fuzz or tuner to a multi-effects unit with a display. Individual units are usually small, durable, battery or supply powered and connected by short patch cables in a chain. The term is now used more or less interchangeably with pedal, though stomp box tends to imply the traditional single-function metal box.
Example: a small metal stomp box with one knob and one switch is often the most useful device on a player's board.
