String post
The short cylindrical shaft on a machine head that the string passes through and winds around.
The post is where the string terminates, and how it is wound matters more than most players expect: too many turns and the string slips, too few and it can pull out under a bend. Winding downwards from the hole keeps the string break angle over the nut consistent, which improves tuning stability. The height of the post, and whether it is slotted or drilled, is also what the string tree or retainer bar is designed to work with.
Example: A string that keeps slipping out of tune after a bend is usually wound too loosely around its string post.
