Front of house

The position in the audience area where the sound engineer mixes the performance, and by extension the mix the audience hears.

Front of house is where the engineer hears what the crowd hears, as opposed to the monitor engineer who looks after the players. The position is usually chosen for a balanced view of the system, which is rarely at the very front of the stage where the bass can be overwhelming. From the player's point of view, front of house is the mix that matters, and a guitarist should expect their on-stage sound to differ noticeably from it.

Example: The console in the middle of the room, out in front of the stage, is the front-of-house position.
