My Guitar Notes

Head

The amplifier chassis and its cabinet when the speaker is housed separately, as opposed to a combination amplifier.

The arrangement lets the player choose a cabinet to suit the room and the speaker to suit the tone, and it means a failure in the speaker does not take the whole rig out of service. Heads are usually heavier in the transformer department and lighter in the cabinet, since they no longer have to carry a driver. It has become the standard professional format for larger venues and for studio work.

Example: a fifty-watt head into a closed-back cabinet gives a player the option of swapping speakers without changing amplifiers.
