Output transformer

The transformer that couples the output valves of a valve amplifier to the speaker, matching their high impedance to the speaker's low impedance.

Valves work at high voltage and high impedance while speakers work at low voltage and low impedance, so the output transformer is essential rather than optional in a valve amplifier. It also shapes tone heavily: its size, winding and core determine how much low end and how much high-frequency detail survives, and a small transformer contributes to the compressed, midrange character of many classic designs. Because it carries the full output current, it is also the component most often damaged by running an amplifier into the wrong load.

Example: Running a valve amp with no speaker connected can destroy its output transformer within seconds.
