My Guitar Notes

Overdub

A part recorded on top of an existing recording while the player listens to what has already been captured.

Overdubbing allows a musician to record one part at a time rather than performing the whole arrangement live, which is how most records have been made since the tape era. The performer hears the existing tracks through headphones and plays along, and the new part is captured on another track. It is a powerful but disorienting way to work, since the player is reacting to a recording rather than to other musicians, and it can be repeated without limit.

Example: A guitarist recording a solo over a finished backing track, hearing the band through headphones, is overdubbing.
