Patch bay

A panel of sockets that lets the connections between pedals, amplifiers and effects be changed by moving short cables instead of rewiring.

A patch bay brings all the send and return points of a rig out to one face where they can be joined in any order, which is invaluable for studio work and for players who rearrange their signal chain often. It also makes it possible to insert a pedal into a chain or bypass a whole section without crawling behind the amplifier. The trade-off is that every extra connection is a possible point of failure and a small addition of capacitance, so simple rigs often leave it out.

Example: A rack panel with rows of sockets that a guitarist re-links with short cables to change effect order is a patch bay.
