Fret size changes touch before it changes tone.
The wire you feel under your fingers is the first variable.
Taller frets mean less finger contact with the board, which changes how much pressure a note needs and how easily a bend holds pitch. That is felt immediately. The tonal difference is secondary and mostly arrives via a lighter touch.
Wider frets change the spacing between contact points at the crown and make vibrato feel different, especially under the ring finger.
If a player says a guitar "plays itself", the frets and the setup are usually the reason, not the pickups.
